A beginner bassist's foray into the unknown

Just do it.

I bought an old lefty Ibanez 4-string back around 1996. After a year of on-again-off-again false starts at learning how to play, it got shelved… for about 15 years.

On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving in 2010, I picked it up again, hit Craig’s List and found an instructor. I went to 2 lessons and decided to go it alone. This blog will detail my progress and hopefully help a few other stumbling learners get on their feet and practicing.

The end.

I like your site. It’s inspiring. I played bass seriously from the mid-80s until the late 90s (played tons of shows, recorded a few albums, toured once), but I just started blowing dust off of my old instrument again lately and am very rusty. I’m into a lot of music now that I wasn’t then, so I’m enjoying rediscovering the bass. Anyway, good luck with your endeavors!

Thanks! I hope it does help to guide or inspire other bassists or would-be-bassists (like myself) to go ahead with their playing. I just started looking at other blogs last night and came across yours. I like it as well. You’re like an amalgam of my wife and myself. She’s a librarian at the Met, in NY. 😉

Thanks for writing it. I need to work through the book still, but I’ve been trying to apply what I can to the practice I’m doing with Ed Friedland’s Building Rock Bass Lines.

I can’t speak for Warner, or the band, but my feeling is that the label did it. I don’t know if this is a manual process or a bot. I doubt it was the band. I just don’t think they’re big enough or business-minded enough to want to do that, especially since it was generating exposure for them.

Great page with interesting topics, thanks. I’m a frequent visitor and like to follow your exercises and explanation. Unfortunately I can’t find any contact details for questions etc. Best of luck and keep up the good work!

Thanks! Its great to know that what I write is helping other people learn to play bass, and maybe get them thinking about music in general. I like that my explanations are helpful to you. My hope is that they bring clarity to topics that I’m only just learning as well. 😉

If you have questions you can use the comment areas in each post to send them to me. I check the blog fairly frequently, so I should see them within a day or two. I can also be emailed at doctrinal_expletives at yahoo.com. (I’m leaving out the @ sign so that bots on the web don’t grab the address too easily.)
