Here’s another video from Scott Whitley that was just posted on Talkbass. The last one he posted was about subdividing beats to work out interesting rhythms. This one is about creating fills – in a way, its about improvising on certain bars or measures in an otherwise repetitive or predictable rhythm.
I’ve seen the “think like a drummer” idea before. I’ve even seen interesting permutations of it, like Jayen Varma‘s tabla-based playing, but what stood out to me more in this video was his idea of coming up with fills every day to expand musical vocabulary, and also seeing just where they’re placed.
