A beginner bassist's foray into the unknown

Hal Leonard Bass Method (Ed Friedland) index

HLBM

I’ve put together this index for anyone who wants to read about my experiences using the Hal Leonard Bass Method by Ed Friedland. Its a great method. Ed’s a fantastic teacher. I have the Complete Edition that combines books 1-3 and has 3 CD’s.

I’ll update this index as I go through the book. I tried using it back in 2011, but stopped. I can’t even remember why anymore, because I always liked it a lot. Anyhow, as of this writing, its 2015. One of my goals for this year is to finally finish it, or get close. I’ve been reading a lot of nice success stories on Talkbass, which is encouraging, and Ed & I have the same haircut.

1st attempt (2011)

2nd attempt (2015)

Stopped for 5 months, then resumed – now with practice recordings:

Haven’t resumed since *2015* but here’s what I’ve done in 2016, so far:

Started a practice log in October 2016. HLBM practice will go there, unless I cover new ground and blog about it on this site.

Thanks! The book itself is excellent. I’m hoping that my blogging about it helps other beginners who are using it or considering using it as well.

Yes, definitely – especially if you can’t read music yet. Later on, I think in parts 2 and 3, more theory is introduced as well, at a manageable pace.

The Talkbass forums have a ton of people who recommend it, and many who have used it for themselves or for their students.
