“Jonas Hellborg & Shawn Lane – 1997 – Time Is the Enemy”

A friend of mine who habitually steps over the line with his comments and recommendations on Facebook told me to listen to this track the other day. Its what got him into jazz fusion, and I can see why. Here we have Jonas Hellborg, fusioneer extraordinaire on bass, with guitarist Shawn Lane playing what amounts to an almost 7-minute solo on guitar and Jeff Sipe on drums. This is Time is the Enemy, title track off of a live album from 1997.

Apart from the sheer virtuosity of the assembled musicians, what blows my mind about the recording is that it was improvised live. Sadly, Shawn Lane passed right before the album was remastered and re-released in 2004.
