A beginner bassist's foray into the unknown

Death – Lack of Comprehension Fretless Bass Cover

I came across this Canadian bass player covering In Human Form from Death via Bass Musician Magazine on Facebook about an hour ago. At the time of the vid, she’d been playing for about 2 years. Intrigued, I looked at her channel, and, lo and behold – Lack of Comprehension – my favorite Death song! Not only does she do an amazing job – she had only been playing for 1.5 years when she did it! Someone’s doing something right, and it isn’t me…

Here’s Ana Dujakovic, apparently from Serbia/Croatia and now residing in Canada and blowing my mind at how much can be accomplished with enough sweat and a healthy appreciation for Steve DiGiorgio.

In the comment section, Mattia Colpo asked “Impressive, how did you improve your 3 finger playing? Some specific exercise?” and Ana responded with “just started off really really slow playing triplets with three fingers, in various patterns, and then extended it to the rest of my playing. and playing scales with three fingers, and changing patterns of like starting with the index/middle/ring finger first, etc hope this helps and thanks for the compliment!”

She also says that she practices for at least an hour a day – something I see recommended virtually everywhere that I go. I’m very curious what her practice routine looks like, what she’s learned and in what order.

You’re welcome, and thank you for making that video. I talk about this with my wife all the time – we need more women instrumentalists In extreme metal! What you’re doing is important to the evolution of the genre.

  2. She’s very good for the time she’s been playing when recorded the Death bass cover. I too was impressed. Still you can see the tell tale signs of a new player in the video and having since made a study of the song lack of comprehension I came to learn she is regurgitating the songster tabs version. The Isolated bass track tells a much more difficult and intriguing story.
